A Guide to Working from Home

Create a Great Website
Use more than one domain name!
the chances of finding the perfect domain name that is keyword focused, site
descriptive and easy to type, as well as being catchy are very slim. The answer is to
register more than one name.
Choose a Keyword Focused Domain Name First
Select the most important and relevant keyword or key-phrase for your website. Use
keyword selection tools to assist you if possible. Wordtracker is an excellent piece of
software, but the full version is quite expensive in the beginning, so you can use the
free version until you decide it;s time to advertise.
Another excellent and free tool is available with ABCsearch which we will also use to
direct traffic to your website at a later time.
If your website is a nice tidy niche topic like 'children's home education' then search for
the keywords individually and combined to find the most frequently used search term
that people use to find what you are providing.
The keyword tools all point to 'home school' and 'home schooling' being the most
frequently used search terms by people looking for information about teaching
children at home.
The next step is to search Google, Yahoo and a few other search engines using those
search terms to find out how many other pages are using the same keywords. Don't
be put off by when you see 200,000,000 other pages, what you are interested in is
which keywords the websites on the first and second pages of search engine returns
are using.
You also want to look around the search engine return page to see how many
sponsored links are on the page. If you intend to generate income from Google
Adsense or another of the paid-per-click advertisers, then you want to see at least 8
adverts on the first page. This indicates that there is competition for the top slots and
therefore higher revenue clicks for you as a publisher.
Take your time looking at each of the web returns from the search engines on the first
and second pages.
A useful tip is to 'right-click' on each website and
select 'view source'. A new window will open
showing the page source code. Next use
'CTRL and F' on your keyboard to bring up a
search box and type the word 'keyword' in the
box. This should take you to the section of code
that includes the keywords. Not all sites use this
facility, but some do and you can glean some useful
information.
Once you have selected your best keyword you need to see if this keyword is
available as a domain name.....and you can more or less guarantee it won't be! Don't
despair though, there are still millions of options available that will still include the
keyword or phrase you desire.
You will undoubtedly have to use two or more words in your domain name. Separate
these words using hyphens (dashes). Search engines are looking for websites that
contain information relating to a specific search term. If they find that search term in
your domain name you instantly receive more attention and if they discover that the
same keyword is used extensively in your site then they will score you highly on the
returns pages.
Many domain name registrars provide tools to assist you in finding a domain name.
Just remember they are not usually interested in helping you find the BEST domain
name!
Once you discover that 'home-schooling.com, .net, .org, .biz etc. have already been
taken, try adding your next most important keyword to the name and search again.
For instance: home-schooling-for-children.com or home-schooling-resources.com.
If you cannot find what you want then keep thinking and searching. Don't compromise
on this important issue.
The final domain name might be lengthy and not what you wanted at all. It doesn't
matter as long as it includes your keywords as suggested.
Now you can find the short and catchy domain name you always wanted to use -
perhaps you thought blinky.com was easy to spell and remember. You can register
that name too and then have all the traffic from that name directed to your keyword
focused domain name.
Now you have the best of both worlds. Your website will be hosted as
http://www.english-home-schooling-resources.com, but you only ever have to type
www.blinky.com for people to find you.
Now that you have your domain name, let's find the best place to host your website.
Choose the best domain name for your website

include the most important
keyword relating to the
content of your website.
2. The domain name should
be easy to descriptive if
possible.
3. The domain name should
be memorable and/or easy to
type.
How do you put all of these
elements into one name?
Answer - you don't have to!
